The MARC 983 field is a Folger-specific local field used by the TIND ILS. The content of MARC 983 determines what displays in the "Item access" facet of the catalog.
It is similar to MARC 980 (TIND's "Collection" field) and MARC 991 (used for suppressing records from public display), both of which also depend on Folger staff entering specific text.
Make a separate 983 field for each type of item access that applies to the record. For example, a 19th-century book with an ordinary copy in the Open stacks, a special copy annotated by the author in the vault, and images of the vault copy in the online digital image collection will have three 983 fields.
Use one or more of the following (entry order does not matter)
983__ $$aOnline 983__ $$aOpen stacks 983__ $$aReading Room 983__ $$aVault
