The Bibliographic Citation field in the Folger catalog is used to record references to standard bibliographies in which the material described appears. Recent entries use the wording established in Standard Citation Forms for Rare Materials Cataloging developed and maintained by the Bibliographic Standards Committee of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of the Association of College & Research Libraries, a division of the American Library Association.
Many older entries retain the very brief wording established in Standard Citation Forms for Published Bibliographies and Catalogs Used in Rare Book Cataloging. These are gradually being replaced. See Folgerpedia's List of old bibliographic citations matched to new forms.
In general, entries follow this pattern: Surname, Initial(s). Title excluding initial articles, entry-number
All references to STC, Wing, and ESTC in the Folger catalog are updated as follows:
Old form | New Folger catalog form[1] |
---|---|
STC (2nd ed.) | Pollard, A.W. Short-title catalogue of books printed in England, Scotland, & Ireland and of English books printed abroad, 1475-1640 (2nd ed.) (STC) |
Wing (2nd ed.) | Wing, D.G. Short-title catalogue of books printed in England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and British America, and of English books printed in other countries, 1641-1700 (2nd ed.) |
ESTC | English short title catalogue (ESTC) |
For instructions to Folger catalogers on the use of this field, see MARC 510 Reference Citation Note.
Notes
- ↑ Note that the new Hamnet form for STC and ESTC is non-standard in order to be able to continue using the initialisms "STC" and "ESTC" when searching. The official form omits the parenthetical initialisms shown here.
