Talk:List of MARC 21 fields for bibliographic data

Style

  • Title the articles with MARC field and description from the MARC 21 format. Do not include the signification of whether the field is repeating.
  • Start the lead sentence with this phrase "MARC 21 field xxx in the bibliographic format contains" and copy and paste the official MARC description.

Same fields in different formats

There are a number of fields that are valid and have the exact same parameters in both the bibliographic and holdings formats. I'm thinking we should create separate guide page and possibly separate articles for the different formats. E.g., the article is entitled 856 Electronic access and location, and since the MARC format states that these fields are identical in both, the article explicitly uses both, as in "MARC field 856 in the bibliographic and holdings formats contains information ... "

The "List of MARC 21 fields for holdings data" would also link to this article. If they're not exactly the same, the article should for the field should be divided into sections but still contain both. --Deborah J. Leslie (talk) 17:23, 3 April 2014 (EDT)

Redirecting from field name

Erin & I talked about making redirects from the field name, since the article titles will begin with the field code, but I'm not sure what we gain by this. Anyone searching, for instance, "cataloging source" will bring up the article 040 Cataloging source. --Deborah J. Leslie (talk) 18:15, 3 April 2014 (EDT)
