MARC 752 Added Entry - Hierarchical Place Name
MARC field 752 in the bibliographic format contains a hierarchical form of a geographic name relating to an attribute of the described material. Folger practice: use for the place of publication, production, or creation of vault materials. Each place name element in this field is included in the Catalog's "Place created" facet.
Note: Relationship designators in ǂe are now authorized for use in MARC 752, but are not yet being used at the Folger because (a) it turns out some earlier records did use 752 for purposes other than place of publication/creation (e.g. place where a sermon was preached) so we can't simply do a bulk addition of ǂe to existing records, and (b) we need to determine which terms we will use in ǂe.

Policy
- Add 752 to records for vault material
- Only use 752 for place of publication or creation of the resource (we are revisiting this now that relationship designators are authorized for use in MARC 752; meanwhile, if considered important, use MARC 751 for place of occurrence, e.g., if the material is related to an event, such as a sermon or auction)
- Add one 752 for each place name
Formulation
This field ends with a full stop before the subfield ‡2 unless another mark of punctuation is present.
- Use the authorized form of the place name as found in its NACO authority record.
- In general, the content and layout of the elements, although not the indicators or the delimiters, will follow MARC field 781 in the authority record for that place name.
- Do not use ǂc (Intermediate political jurisdiction) unless not using ǂd (City).
- For the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and Australia, use those country name as the first element (ǂa), and the first-order political jurisdiction (e.g. Illinois, British Columbia, England, New South Wales) as the second element (ǂb).
- If a place name has a parenthetical qualifier necessary for disambiguation, do not interpose it in 752 ǂc. Instead, subdivide according to the "equivalent name" given in the 781 field of the authority record. E.g., 752 Germany ǂd Weimar (Thuringia) ‡2 naf
- Australia is an exception to following the 781 in the authority record; interpose the state name between country and city, just as we do for Great Britain, Canada, and the U.S. It differs from the practice used for Weimar and Beaumont as illustrated below--the latter uses the qualifier to disambiguate cities of the same name.
- For jurisdictions now contained in a larger metropolitan area, subdivide only to the city in subject headings (per the Subject Headings Manual). E.g., for City of Westminster, use 752 Great Britain ǂb England ǂd London. ǂ2 naf
- Add
ǂ2 naf
(per email from Network Development and MARC Standards Office 23 February 2016, this is fine).
