The desktop version of Luna now uses Mirador as its viewer, allowing uses to perform image manipulations--adjusting contrast and saturation, or rating or flipping the image, for example--within Luna, as well as to easily compare multiple images side-by-side.

NOTE: Any image manipulation or comparison is session-based only. The shareable URL and image exports will not include any of the manipulations done or additional images added.

Mirador

Mirador is an open-source viewer optimized for IIIF-compatible images. It is currently the standard viewer for the desktop version of the Folger's Luna instance.

Mirador is used in Luna's image detail view. To access its image manipulation features, hover over the image with the cursor. Two icons will appear to the top-left of the image; clicking on the icon that resembles three horizontal lines with sliders on them will expand the image manipulation features.

There are an additional two icons above the image; clicking on the icon that resembles for arrows pointing outwards diagonally will open images in the full view, which allows multiple images to be compared side-by-side.

Using Mirador to manipulate images

The image manipulation options, from left to right, are as follows:

  • Rotate images to the right, in 90 degree increments.
  • Rotate images to the left, in 90 degree increments.
  • Adjust image brightness.
  • Adjust image contrast.
  • Adjust image saturation.
  • Toggle grayscale on and off.
  • Toggle color inversion on and off.
  • Reset image to original settings.

Using Mirador to compare images

Within the full view, select the change layout option towards the top right of the screen. Highlighting multiple boxes will allow you to choose how many images to compare, as well as how those images will be arranged on the screen. Once the layout is selected, the full view will display additional tiles, each of which contain a plus sign and text reading "addItem".

To add an additional image, you must obtain the URL for the IIIF manifest of the image you'd like to add. Within the Folger's Luna instance, the IIIF manifest is available for any image from the image detail view. Click the "Share" button from the menu bar above the image. Click on the triangle next to "IIIF" at the bottom of the Share pop-up to expand the pop-up. The URL that appears under "IIIF" is the URL for that item's IIIF manifest.

A number of other institutions also use IIIF for their digital image collections, and manifest URLs from these collections can also be plugged in to the Folger's Luna instance for the purposes of comparison. A list of some of these collections is available through the IIIF Awesome List.

To add an additional image, just click on one of the blank tiles. Paste the URL for the image's IIIF manifest in the text box at the top right of the screen, and click the "load" button. The new image will then appear on the list at the center of the screen. Click on it to return to the full view screen, with the new image added.
