The Voice of Women in American Poetry (2014)

The Voice of Women in American Poetrywas part of a national series with the Poetry Society of America that paid tribute to the immense achievement of a wide range of poets, from Phillis Wheatley to Adrienne Rich, Ai, June Jordan, and Wanda Coleman. Poets Hailey Leithauser and Shara McCallum reflected on the poetry of Marianne Moore and Elizabeth Alexander and read from their own acclaimed work. The event was held at the Folger's Elizabethan Theatre on March 24, 2014 at 5:30; the event was free and open to the public, though an RSVP was recommended.

Hailey Leithauser

Hailey Leithauser is the author of Swoop, which won the Poetry Foundation's Emily Dickinson First Book Award in 2013. Her poems have appeared in many journals, including Poetry, Agni Online, Crazyhorse, The Gettysburg Review, and The Iowa Review, as well as Best American Poetry. She is the recipient of the Discovery/The Nation Prize and an Individual Artist's Grant from the Maryland State Arts Council.

Shara McCallum

Shara McCallum Shara McCallum is the Director of the Stadler Center for Poetry, a professor at Bucknell University, and the author of This Strange Land, Song of Thieves and The Water Between Us, winner of the 1998 Agnes Lynch Starrett Prize. Her poems have appeared in The Antioch Review, Chelsea, The Iowa Review, and Verse. She is the recipient of a Tennessee Individual Artist Grant in Literature and a grant from the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund.
