Setting preferences in Voyager

Use the settings below to customize Voyager when getting started for the first time, or setting up Voyager on a new computer. The Cataloging module settings are based on the Voyager 9.1 interface, and are current as of June 2016. The Acquisitions module and Cataloging module for Acquisitions staff settings are based on the Voyager 10.1 interface, and are current as of January 2020.

Acquisitions module

Session defaults

  • purchase order
    • Ship to Acquisitions Department
    • Bill to: Acquisitions Department
  • Line item copies/funds
    • Intended location: DeckB-Open Stacks (or DeckC-Vault or other vault)
    • For this location:
      • number of copies: 1
      • ship to Acquisitions Department
      • Commit to fund: Acq 19-20/Modern (update for year and fund as appropriate)
  • Holdings
    • point to default holdings template: C:\Program Files (x86)\Voyager\Catalog\Template\hold.tem

Cataloging module settings for Acquisitions staff

General tab

  • If you mostly work with Open stacks books
    • Holding/item default location: DeckB-Open stacks
    • Call number hierarchies: Modern-LC
    • Bibliographic import/replace profile: Add unconditional
    • Bib Overlay import/replace profile: (none)
    • Authority import/replace profile: LCNAF
  • If you mostly work with Vault materials
    • Holding/item default location: DeckC-Vault (or other vault, if appropriate)
    • Call number hierarchies: Rare-Acc
    • Bibliographic import/replace profile: Add unconditional
    • Bib Overlay import/replace profile: (none)
    • Authority import/replace profile: LCNAF
  • Check Delete records from work files...
  • Check Delete records from import file...
  • Check box for "Add a subfield 'a' to a new field" if preferred (this will depend on what type of editing you do most frequently in Voyager)

Validation tab

  • Cataloging formats: MARC21
  • Check-mark these boxes:
    • Bypass MARC Validation
    • Bypass MARC21 Character set validation
    • Bypass Authority Control validation
    • Bypass decomposition of accented characters for MARC21
    • Bypass ISBN validation
    • Bypass ISSN validation

Workflow tab Check-mark the following:

  • Retain last search
  • Automatic truncation for non keyword searches
  • Display record directly if search results in only one title
  • Check for Duplicate Item Barcodes
  • (optional) Suppress confirmation message upon successful save
  • Update permanent location of attached items when MFHD is saved to the database
  • Update item type of attached items when MFHD is saved to the database...
  • Retain hierarchy selections

Item defaults tab

  • Select a default Item Type according to what material you work with most frequently (or leave blank if this varies).

Folders/files tab Acquisitions and Cataloging staff only:

  • In Templates section, click the box marked with an ellipsis to open the Select Template dialog
    • Navigate to C:\Program Files\Voyager\Catalog\Template (it may open straight to the Catalog folder)
    • Select the matching templates (.tem files) for Bib, Hldg, and Auth respectively

Mapping tab

  • Local Import: MARC21 MARC-8 (non-Unicode)
  • MARC mapping: Tag 500, subfield a

Colors/Fonts tab

Set according to personal preference, as long as "Font" choice is a Unicode font (e.g., Lucida Sans Unicode).

  • Font sizes from 8 to 72 can be typed directly into the Font Size box, or you can pick from the limited drop-down menu
    • CAUTION: the font size and bold/not-bold affects what you see on the screen and what prints out, so if you pick a huge font size, then print a record, it will take up a kazillion sheets of paper.

Cataloging module

These instructions cover settings for all users of the Cataloging module, not just catalolgers, except where indicated.

Catalogers only: Before getting started, navigate to Cataloging (I:)/Connexion/LocalSaveFiles, and create a folder named with your initials, e.g. I:/Connexion/LocalSaveFiles/ABC, if you have not already done so. This is the folder where your import and export files will be stored by Connexion and Voyager (see Folders/Files heading below). Once you have a local save folder, go to Options > Preferences in the relevant Voyager module.

Everyone: From the top menu bar, select Options > Preferences and set the following options:

General tab

  • If you mostly work with Open stacks books
    • Holding/item default location: DeckB-Open stacks
    • Call number hierarchies: Modern-LC
    • Bibliographic import/replace profile: Modern or Replace on 035 match
    • Bib Overlay import/replace profile: (none)
    • Authority import/replace profile: LCNAF
  • If you mostly work with Vault materials
    • Holding/item default location: DeckC-Vault (or other vault, if appropriate)
    • Call number hierarchies: Rare-Acc
    • Bibliographic import/replace profile: Replace on 035 match

  • Check boxes for "Delete records from work/import files..." if preferred
  • Check box for "Add a subfield 'a' to a new field" if preferred (this will depend on what type of editing you do most frequently in Voyager)

  • Collection Description staff check-mark these boxes:
    • Bypass MARC Validation
    • Bypass Authority Control validation
    • Bypass ISBN validation
    • Bypass ISSN validation
  • Other staff: check-mark these boxes (that is, same as above except also "Character set validation"):
    • Bypass MARC Validation
    • Bypass MARC21 Character set validation
    • Bypass Authority Control validation
    • Bypass ISBN validation
    • Bypass ISSN validation

Workflow tab

Check-mark the following (optional where indicated):

  • (optional) Retain last search
