Field 544 in the bibliographic and holdings formats contains the name and address of custodians of archival materials related to the described materials by provenance, specifically by having been, at a previous time, a part of the same collection or record group. The Folger uses field 544 to record the existence of related material held by the Folger Shakespeare Library and/or other repositories. This field is repeatable.

Field is searched as part of an "all notes" search.

Policy and formulation

Folger catalogers use ǂn for the entire text of the Location of Other Archival Materials Note (per MARC 21 "Subfield $n may be used instead of the specific subfields for title of materials, custodian, and provenance.") This is because we want the note to easily be eye-readable, and because there is no controlled vocabulary for the subfield contents anyway (so the effort to make each element machine-actionable is moot).

Phrase the note so that it will make sense both with and without a specific label.

Examples

544    ǂn Fourteen similar receipts for goods and services provided to Nell Gwyn, plus other Gwyn household finance documents, appear as Lot 5 in the Sotheby's London catalog for July 17, 2008.
