The Folger Shakespeare Library has several different series of card catalogs. None are currently being added to or maintained, but some contain records for material not (yet) described elsewhere.

Printed books (includes atlases and maps)

All cards are located in the main card catalog room (next to the entrance to the Old Reading Room)

  • Author, title, and subject cards interfiled (some not in Hamnet)
  • Chronological, by year:
    • STC period publications
    • Wing period publications
    • English 18th century publications (many not in Hamnet)
    • Continental publications to 1800 (many not in Hamnet)
  • Continental printers to 1800, by name (many not in Hamnet)
  • Continental place of publication to 1800, by city (many not in Hamnet)
  • Former owners:
    • Main file, by name
    • Harmsworth, by STC number
  • Other:
    • Books with manuscript notes (drawer labeled "Former Owners: MSS Notes")
    • Book prices (i.e., handpress era books containing indications of how much was paid for them)

All cards except for the Former Owners file and the Manuscript Notes file are in the little room to the left of the main card catalog room.

Art

All cards except for the STC Illustrations file and the Wing Illustrations File are in the little room to the left of the main card catalog room.

  • Prints: artist, title, and subject interfiled
  • Photographs: by subject
  • Drawings and watercolors:
    • Artist, on photocopied cards in two 3-ring binders
    • Subject on 3 x 5 cards cross-referenced to artists on photocopied cards in two 3-ring binders
  • Chronological: pre-1700 prints
  • Illustrations (located in the main card catalog room):
    • STC period by subject (not in Hamnet)
    • Wing period by subject (very incomplete; not in Hamnet)

Other

All cards are located in the main card catalog room (next to the entrance to the Old Reading Room)

    • Actor

    • Garment or object type
  • Playbills (not in Hamnet):
    • Main file: by city, then theater, then season (no access by actors or plays)

  • Folgeriana [i.e. about the Folger] (mostly not in Hamnet)

  • Shakespeare Miscellany [i.e. ephemera and offprints receiving minimal description]
  1. De Ricci numbers can also be found by doing an Advanced Search of the "Bibliographic citation" field in Hamnet: search for "Ricci" and "Medieval" and the number (NB. if the number includes a decimal, be sure to search it "as a phrase" or it will be searched as two numbers).
