Free Folger Friday: The Language of the Fan, one of the Talks and Screenings at the Folger, was held in the Paster Reading Room of the Folger Shakespeare Library on Friday, February 22, 2019 at 6:30pm.

Much more than a mere accessory, it is widely believed that fans were used by women in the 18th and 19th centuries to relay secret messages. Alongside Folger Theatre's production of Nell Gwynn, audiences were invited to a pre-show workshop in the nuanced language of fan gesturing, led by ECD in DC. Members of the beloved local dance troupe taught participants how to slyly tell a paramour the secrets of your heart, so guests could continue practicing this age-old art long after the night was over. Participants took home a souvenir fan and were treated to the night's signature cocktail to sip on during the event.
