As she later told Auburn's magazine Spectrum, "While in Austria, I discovered that what I truly loved doing was reading and that I could actually make a living doing just that." She went on to earn a master's degree in English at the University of Virginia, working with the eminent Shakespeare scholar Fredson Bowers. While there, as she told the magazine, she realized that "studying Shakespeare was where I belonged." </ins></div></td></tr>

Her other publications include The Dramaturgy of Shakespeare's Romances and many scholarly articles, among them major essays on The Tempest. Barbara was also president of the Shakespeare Association of America and of the Southeast Renaissance Conference, chair of the MLA Committee on the New Variorum Shakespeare, and a member of the Advisory Board of the International Shakespeare Conference (Stratford-upon-Avon). In her address, she described the pleasure of listening to tourists at the Folger Shakespeare Library talk about Shakespeare. When she heard "one saying to another, ‘Look, there's Hamlet’—‘That must be Falstaff’—I feel my spirits lift a little," she said.
