This event occurred on March 10, 2006 at 8:00 pm in the Folger's Elizabethan Theatre, on the 30th Anniversary of Raymond Carver's book, Will You Please Be Quiet, Please?.

Richard Ford is the author of eight books of fiction including Independence Day for which he won the Pulitzer Prize and the PEN/Faulkner Award. He received the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story and is a current member of the PEN/Faulkner Board of Directors.

Jayne Anne Phillips is the author of three novels, MotherKind, Shelter, and Machine Dreams (nominated for a National Book Critics Circle Award); as well as two collections of stories, Fast Lanes, and Black Tickets, winner of the Sue Kaufman Prize. The recipient of an Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, she is Professor of English at Rutgers-Newark University, where she will direct a proposed MFA Program.

Joy Williams’s most recent novel is The Honored Guest. The Quick and The Dead was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and Ill Nature was a finalist for the National book Critics Circle Award for Criticism. Among her many honors are the Rea Award for the short story and a Strauss Living Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Tobias Wolff’s works include This Boy’s Life, In Pharaoh’s Army, The Barracks Thief, winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award, In The Garden of the North American Martyrs, Back in the World, The Night in Question, and Old School, finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. He is the recipient of numerous other awards, including the Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
