Open a new Google sheet.

Highlight all cells and set the border color to white.

Set the height of rows 1 and 3 and the width of column A to be very small; these are used for spacing rather than for content.

Merge columns B-D in row 2. Place basic information about the manuscript and instructions for the transcribathon in this cell:

Lady Ann Fanshawe's1651-1707 recipe book is held by the Wellcome (MS7113).

1-2-3-4 Instructions: 1) Sign in to your account at FromThePage. If you don't have an account, click the "Sign Up Now" button here to get one. 2) Write your name and the email you used to sign up for FromThePage in the Transcriber column next to the page you'd like to transcribe. 3) Click on the image link in the Page Link column to take you directly to your transcription. 4) Change the Status to "In progress" once you've started, and "Complete" once you're finished. Lady Ayscough's 1692 recipe book is held by the Wellcome (MS1026).

Instructions: Write your name and the email you used to sign up for FromThePage in the Reviewer columns next to the page you'd like to review the transcription for. The link in the Page Link column will take you directly to the transcription. Change the Status to "In progress" once you've started, and "Complete" once you're finished. 1st reviewers should not begin their work until the transcriber has marked their work as complete, and 2nd reviewers should not begin their work until the 1st reviewer has marked their work as complete.

Help: This Folgerpedia page gives an overview of the tags, as well as shortcuts and transcription conventions.
Sample transcriptions are available for both manuscripts in the transcribathon.
You can use the Notes box at the bottom of the transcription page to ask questions. Folger staff and EMROC will be monitoring the notes, and will respond as soon as possible.

Place column headers in row 4: (B) Page Link, (C) Transcriber, (D) Status

Creating links to page images

  • Navigate to the contents tab of the manuscript in FromThePage. Open the first and last page images in a new tab. The page IDs for those pages will be in the URL. They should iterate by one until the final page; confirm this against the total number of images in case something weird happened during the ID generation.
  • Open a blank sheet in google sheets. Paste the first page ID in the first cell of a column B, and the second page ID (the first ID plus one) in the cell immediately below it. (Cells B1 and B2.) Highlight those two cells, and then drag them down, allowing google to autofill, until you reach the final page ID.
  • In the next column, place ","Image 1 in the first cell, and ","Image 2 in the cell immediately below it. (Cells C1 and C2.) Highlight both, and drag them down, allowing google to autofill, until you reach the same row as the final page ID.
  • In the next column (D), paste ") into each cell, through the same row as the final page ID.
  • Concatenate these cells: In column E, type the formula =B1&C1&D1 Drag this formula down, allowing google to autofill, until you reach the same row as the final page ID.
  • Add the rest of the URL text: in column F, type the formula ="(""https://fromthepage.com/display/display_page?page_id="&E1 Drag this formula down, allowing google to autofill, until you reach the same row as the final page ID.
  • Build the hyperlink formula: in column A, type the formula ="=HYPERLINK"&F1 Drag this formula down, allowing google to autofill, until you reach the same row as the final page ID.
  • Copy column A, and paste special -- values into the link column of the sign-up sheet. To get the links to display properly, use find and replace to find https and replace with https (This doesn't change anything, but forces google to recognize that it should be displaying links instead of the formula used to build them.)
