Connexion client options

The first time you use the Connexion client, go to Tools > Options to customize your "profile" to match Folger practice and your preferences. You can also create custom macros, text strings, and "User Tools." To avoid having to re-do the options when moving to a new computer, you'll need to copy your existing profile to the new computer.

Settings

Before opening the Options dialog in Connexion upon initial set-up:

  • Catalogers should navigate to Cataloging (I:)/Connexion/LocalSaveFiles, and create a folder named with your initials, e.g., I:/Connexion/LocalSaveFiles/ABC, if you have not already done so.
  • Acquisitions staff should navigate to Acquisitions (J:)/Connexion/LocalSaveFiles, and create a folder named with your initials, e.g., J:/Connexion/LocalSaveFiles/ABC, if you have not already done so.

This is the folder where your import and export files will be stored by Connexion (see Export heading below) and Voyager.

You should also create an empty export file at this point to prepare for future record exports. There are two main ways to do this: from the Export tab in the Options dialog (see below), or from the Local File Manager dialog:

From the drop-down "File" menu in Connexion, click on Local File Manager.
Click the Create File button, and navigate to the folder with your initials. (You can also create a new folder at this point, if you did not do this previously.)
In the File name bar, enter your initials (or another name for your save file if desired).
Click the Open button, and Connexion will create a .db file and add its path in the Local File Manager dialog. (Note: Connexion automatically appends an infix to your file name to designate the type of records in the save file - for instance, SEH.bib.db or AuthorityConstantData.authcd.db. This may make the file look like a different format, but it is a .db file!)
You can then click the Set as Default button to designate this as your default save file (recommended, if this is your main save file), or simply save the file path for later.

Once you have a local save folder, go to Tools > Options in Connexion.

Export

Click "Create", make sure that the radio button for "File" is selected, and click "OK". This will open a file dialog box. Navigate to I:\Connexion\LocalSaveFiles\[your initials] (for catalogers) or J:\Connexion\LocalSaveFiles\[your initials] (for acquisitions staff) if you are not already there.
Create a .DAT file by entering a filename in the "File name" box, and click "Open". Another dialog box will open, showing the file path; click "OK".
You can create multiple .DAT files, and name them whatever you want (popular choices include your initials and "test"). Note that whichever .DAT file path is highlighted is your default save file.
If preferred, you can highlight the "File:(Prompt for filename)" option. This will allow you to choose which .DAT file to write to whenever you export a record.
Once you're finished, make sure to click "Apply" to save your changes.

Search WorldCat

When searching for copy:

  • In the "Search WorldCat" screen, check-mark "Apply Language of Cataloging Limiter" and "English" as the language of cataloging. (Only uncheck it if you do not find an English-language record for the item; it's okay to start with a non-English-language record as a last resort).
  • BEWARE: the "Not Internet" setting does not work properly. It should exclude records where the MARC 856 links to the resource itself, but in fact it also excludes records where the MARC 856 links to "version of resource" (See OCLC# 726942324 for an example: The 007 is for Graphic material, not Electronic resource; the 856 is correctly coded to indicate the link is to a version of the resource, not the resource represented by the bibliographic record).

Transferring settings to a new computer

Connexion client options, macros, text strings, logins, toolbar preferences, search history, keymaps, display settings, etc. are stored on the C: drive of each computer you use, and are associated with your Folger network login (not your OCLC login). This lets people on shared computers customize Connexion the way they want. It also means that if you move to a new computer, you either have to reset all your customizations, or you have to copy your Connexion user profile from a computer that already has it set up. Note: This will not affect the settings and options of other people who use that computer; their Profiles are saved in a C: drive folder under their username that only they can access.

Windows XP

  1. While logged in to a computer that has the Connexion settings you want to copy, navigate to your OCLC user profile folder at C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\OCLC\Connex\Profiles, but replace "username" with the username you use to log in to Folger computers (the "Application Data" folder is hidden by default, so you might first need make it visible: Tools > Folder Options > View > Files and Folders > Hidden files and folders > Show hidden files and folders).
  2. You should see a folder named "MyProfile." Copy this folder to a temporary location in your personal network drive (H:\)
  3. If you are moving from an XP machine to a Windows 7 machine, go to the "Windows 7" instructions, below.
  4. Log in to the new computer and launch Connexion (this will automatically create the folder and file referred to in the next step).
  5. Find the same location in the C:\ drive (C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\OCLC\Connex\Profiles where "username" is the username you use to log in to Folger computers).
  6. Delete the "MyProfile" folder on the new computer.
  7. Copy the "MyProfile" folder from its temporary location on your H:\ network drive to the C:\ drive on the new computer.

Windows 7

  1. While logged in to a computer that has the Connexion settings you want to copy, navigate to your OCLC user profile folder at C:\Users\username\AppData Data\Roaming\OCLC\Connex\Profiles, but replace "username" with the username you use to log in to Folger computers (the "AppData" folder is hidden by default, so you might first need make it visible: Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Folder Options > View > Show hidden files, folders, and drives).
