Artistic Research Fellowship
Suzanne Coley is a 2023–25 Folger Shakespeare Institute Fellow. Her work explores the intersection of textiles, printmaking, and literature, translating Shakespeare’s texts into textile-based artist’s books. She was a 2023–24 resident artist and scholar at the Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies.
Exhibitions at the Folger
The Folger Shakespeare Library exhibited Coley’s textile books Gracious Light (2020) and Born of Love (2024), translations of Sonnets 7 and 151, in the Out of the Vault Research Case (September 16, 2024 – February 9, 2025). The Folger acquired her textile book No Longer Yours, translation of Sonnet 13, for its permanent collection and will display it in spring 2025.
Talks at the Folger
As part of her Folger fellowship, Coley led Coded Threads: Translating Shakespeare Through Art, an artist talk exploring the conceptual and technical aspects of translating Shakespeare’s language into fiber art. The talk was part of a daylong event featuring Maryland fiber artists who collaborated with Coley on two textile books inspired by Measure for Measure. Coley’s presentation highlighted the creative process behind the project, offering insights into the intersection of literature and textile design. During the talk, Coley presented two of the four books she created during her Folger residency, Flowers for Mistress Overdone, Book 1 and Book 2 (2024). The books feature elaborately embroidered covers and meticulously crafted textile pages with linocuts and embroidery.
