Spires’s fourth collection ''Worldling'' was described in ''The Washington Post'' as “lucidly and nakedly…convey[ing] universal feelings.” She is able to bring the most meaningful human experiences, including childbirth and parenthood, to bright light. Spires holds a Chair for Distinguished Achievement at Goucher College. Her work ''Now the Green Blade Rises'' was published in 2002.
